We are excited to announce the launch of our webinar series on “Modeling and Simulation in Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering,” aimed at fostering knowledge exchange and collaboration across academia, industry, and the public. This series will delve into cutting-edge methodologies and applications that are transforming the field.
Overview
Join us for an engaging webinar where we will explore cutting-edge techniques in sustainability modeling for bioprocesses and the assessment of their ecological impacts. This session will feature two distinguished speakers who will dive into advanced approaches for evaluating resource efficiency, carbon footprints, and environmental trade-offs in biotechnological production.
Gain valuable insights into the latest advancements in sustainability modeling, understanding of impacts, the knowledge gap and data scarcity in ecological modelling and how to address them. There will be ample opportunity for questions and one-on-one discussions with the speakers.
Topics
Dr. Petschacher from acib will give an overview on possibilities of sustainability assessment with special focus on importance and challenges of assessment in research projects. She will introduce an in-house spread-sheet tool (developed with the partner STRATECO OG) for environmental and carbon footprint assessment and hot-spot analysis at the process unit level. She will showcase its application (and challenges thereby) through a real-world example from evaluation of a biocatalytic process development.
Dr. Peter Satzer from BOKU University will discuss the importance of a holistic process view in biopharmaceutical sustainability. and will explore how understanding factors like water for injection, buffer substances, and lab space contribute to sustainable practices. Key performance indicators for sustainability such as Process Mass Intensity (PMI) and the Water-Related Impact of Energy (WARIEN) will be presented. He will discuss case studies on biopharmaceutical process sustainability, such as monoclonal antibody (mAb) production and share strategies for obtaining meaningful results in data-scarce environments.
