Lab technician: Engineering of yeast strains for protein production

in Vienna, Austria for 30-40 hours a week

That’s the project

The yeast Pichia pastoris is an important host for the production of recombinant secreted proteins of biopharmaceutical interest. In the present project, different approaches to improve productivity by genetic engineering will be pursued.

That could be your tasks

  • Analytical methods for the quantification of proteins (including HPLC)
  • State-of-the art molecular biology and cloning
  • Cultivation of microorganisms in small scale and bioreactors
  • Purification of proteins
  • Detailed protocolling of the experimental work
  • Contribution to general lab organisation

That’s important to us

In the best way you have completed a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Applied Microbiology or a similar study. Research experiences in the following areas would be fine:
  • Practical experience in molecular biology techniques and cultivation of microbial strains in shake flasks required
  • Practical experience and interest in bioreactor cultivations desired
  • Excellent skills in spoken and written English, an organized approach with strong attention to detail and good communication skills with ability to work well in teams.

That’s what you should know

Research will take place in the Institute of Microbiology & Microbial Biotechnology at the Department of Biotechnology and Food Service of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU).

  • The annual gross full-time salary is set between EUR 35.840 – 42.000 (depending on your qualification).
  • This corresponds to a monthly gross amount of between EUR 2.560 – 3.000 (paid 14 times a year).
  • Start: as soon as possible (April/May 2025) – duration for 12 months
